Privacy notice
This notice explains what personal information we collect when you use CalcSorted.com, why we collect it, and what your rights are. If anything is unclear, contact us.
The short version
- The calculators work in your browser. We don’t receive the figures you enter.
- We count page views without cookies, and our host keeps technical logs.
- We collect usage statistics only if you say Yes, and they never include your figures.
- If you report a mistake or email us, we receive what you send.
- We don’t sell information, and we don’t show adverts.
- You don’t have to give us any personal information to use the site. Your email address in a mistake report is optional, but without it we can’t reply.
Who we are
CalcSorted.com is an independent website run by a private individual based in the United Kingdom.
We are the “controller” of your personal information. This means we decide how it is used. You can contact us at hello@calcsorted.com.
The figures you enter
Each calculator works out its results in your browser. We don’t send the figures you type to our server, to an analytics service or to anyone else. We don’t save them on your device either.
The only way your figures leave your browser is if you choose to send them. For example, you might copy a share link and send it to someone, or write the figures in a mistake report.
Share links
Below each calculator there is a button to copy a link to your figures. We build the link only when you press the button.
The figures go at the end of the link, after the # sign. Browsers don’t send that part when they ask a website for
a page. So the figures don’t reach our server or its logs.
But a share link is not secret:
- Anyone who has the link can see the figures in it.
- The link stays in your browser history, like any other web address.
- If you send it by email or a chat app, it is stored there too.
Our page-view counts record the page address without the part after the #, so your figures are not sent with
them.
What we collect, and why
Page views
Our hosting and security provider counts page views for us. Each page loads a small script from the provider to do this. It doesn’t use cookies or store anything on your device, and it doesn’t build a profile of you or follow you to other websites. The count records the page you visited, the website that sent you, your type of browser and device, your country and how fast the page loaded. This gives us statistics about how the site is used. We only see totals.
Choosing No also stops the cookieless page-view count. Press Analytics choice at the bottom of any page and choose No. It takes effect from the next page you open. If your browser blocks site storage, or won’t let us save to it, we don’t count your page views at all.
Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful.
Technical information
Our hosting provider hosts the site. Like every web host, it uses your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and to protect the site from attacks.
Our server handles the mistake reports and the usage statistics. Our hosting provider keeps technical logs of the requests it handles, so we can find and fix faults. These logs can include your IP address and browser details. We never write the content of a report into these logs.
Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the site working and secure.
Usage statistics, only if you say Yes
Near the bottom of the page we ask: “Help us improve: share usage stats?” Nothing is sent unless you say Yes.
If you say Yes, your browser makes a random number and keeps it. Then it sends a short message the first time a calculator shows you a result on a page (“calculated”), and each time a share link is copied to your clipboard (“link_copied”). Each message says which calculator it was, and carries the random number.
The messages never contain the figures you enter, your name or your email address. Our server refuses any message that contains anything else. We store them, with the time they arrived, in a secure statistics store run by our hosting provider.
The random number doesn’t tell us who you are. But it could single out your browser, so we treat it as personal information.
To stop abuse, our server counts how many messages come from each IP address. It uses the IP address only for that count, and doesn’t save it with the messages. See Technical information for what our host’s logs keep.
You can change your mind at any time. Press Analytics choice at the bottom of any page and choose No. After that, your browser sends nothing more, and from the next page you open, the page-view count stops too. If you say Yes again later, your browser makes a new random number.
Lawful basis: your consent.
Mistake reports
Each calculator page, and pages like this one, have a Report a mistake link. The form sends us:
- what you write,
- the address of the page,
- a short code for the version of the page you were reading, so we fix the right version, and
- your email address, if you give it, so we can reply.
The report reaches our inbox as an email, passed on by our hosting provider. We don’t keep reports in a database.
To stop spam, the form uses a spam check that confirms a person is sending it. It loads only when you open the form, and looks at information from your browser and device. Our server sends your IP address to our hosting and security provider with the check. Our server also counts reports from each IP address to stop abuse, and doesn’t save the IP address. See Technical information for what our host’s logs keep.
If the form can’t load, the link opens your own email program instead.
Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in correcting the calculators and replying to you.
Emails to us
If you email hello@calcsorted.com, we receive your message and your email address. Our hosting provider passes it on to our inbox.
Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in answering you.
What is stored on your device
The site stores your analytics choice in your browser and, only if you say Yes, the random number. If you open the report form, the spam check may store a small item too. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. See Cookies and storage for the full list.
Who handles information for us
We use a small number of service providers, who process information for us under contract:
- Our website hosting and security provider (based in the USA): hosting, security, technical logs, the spam check on the report form, page-view counts, usage statistics, and passing emails on to our inbox.
- Our email provider (may process information in the USA): stores the emails and mistake reports we receive.
If you would like the names of these providers, email hello@calcsorted.com.
We don’t sell information, and we don’t show adverts.
Information sent outside the UK
Our website hosting and security provider is based in the USA, so we send your information there. Our email provider may also process information in the USA. When information leaves the UK, the transfer is covered by the UK’s adequacy regulations or by the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. These are legal safeguards that UK law accepts. To ask about them, contact us.
How long we keep it
- Page-view counts: our provider keeps a record of each visit, without cookies or names, for up to six months. We only look at totals.
- Usage statistics: deleted automatically after three months.
- Technical logs: deleted automatically after 3 days.
- Mistake reports and emails: kept for 12 months, then deleted.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you,
- ask us to correct it or delete it,
- object to how we use it, or ask us to limit how we use it,
- ask for the information you gave us in a common computer format, so you can move it to another service, and
- withdraw your consent to usage statistics at any time.
To use any of these rights, contact us. We will reply within one month.
We can only find your usage statistics if you tell us the random number stored in your browser. We don’t know which number belongs to whom.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk (opens in a new tab). We would like the chance to put things right first, so please contact us before you do.
Children and young people
The calculators are about money matters that mostly affect adults, but young people may use them too. So the settings that protect privacy are on for everyone by default:
- Nothing about how you use the calculators is recorded unless you say Yes to usage statistics. Page views are counted without cookies, and we only see totals. Choosing No stops this count too.
- We don’t ask your age, and there are no accounts.
- There are no adverts and no profiles.
- The figures you enter stay in your browser.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we use personal information, we will update this page and the date below.
